About this Chapter

In this chapter, Saul, the first king of Israel, finds himself in a desperate situation. The Philistines have gathered to fight against Israel, and Saul is filled with fear. He seeks guidance from the Lord, but the Lord does not answer him through dreams, prophets, or Urim and Thummim. In his desperation, Saul decides to consult a medium, even though consulting mediums was strictly forbidden by God. Saul disguises himself and goes to the town of Endor to find a medium. He asks her to bring up the spirit of the prophet Samuel, who had died. The medium is initially reluctant, knowing that Saul had banished all mediums and spiritists from the land. However, Saul assures her that she will not be punished, and she agrees to summon Samuel's spirit. When Samuel's spirit appears, Saul asks for guidance, but Samuel's message is not what Saul wants to hear. Samuel tells Saul that the Lord has turned away from him and become his enemy. He predicts that the Philistines will defeat Israel in battle and that Saul and his sons will die the next day. This news fills Saul with fear and despair.
