Easy Bible・2 Samuel 3
2 Samuel 3:1
The war between the house of Saul and the house of David lasted a long time. David grew stronger and stronger, while the house of Saul grew weaker and weaker.
In this chapter, we see the ongoing struggle for power between David and the house of Saul. After the death of Saul, David's power and influence continued to grow, while the house of Saul, led by Abner, struggled to maintain their position. Abner, the commander of Saul's army, made a political move by taking one of Saul's concubines, which was seen as a challenge to David's authority. As the power struggle intensified, Abner decided to defect to David's side, offering to bring the rest of Israel under his rule. David agreed to the alliance, but with one condition: that Michal, David's first wife and Saul's daughter, be returned to him. Abner successfully negotiated the return of Michal, but this move angered Ish-Bosheth, Saul's remaining son and the current king of Israel. The chapter ends with a tragic turn of events. Abner, seeking to solidify his position with David, was betrayed and killed by Joab, David's commander. David mourned Abner's death and publicly distanced himself from Joab's actions, declaring his innocence in the matter.
