Key Passages

2 Samuel 15:12
While Absalom was offering sacrifices, he also sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David's counselor, to come from Giloh, his hometown. And so the conspiracy gained strength, and Absalom's following kept on increasing.

About this Chapter

Absalom, David's son, conspired against his father and won the hearts of the people of Israel by standing at the city gate and offering justice to those who came to him. He gradually gained support and eventually declared himself king in Hebron. Absalom's rebellion was a direct challenge to David's authority as the king of Israel. By undermining David's rule and gaining the loyalty of the people, Absalom sought to overthrow his own father and take the throne for himself. This rebellion caused great distress to David, who had to flee Jerusalem to avoid confrontation with Absalom. It was a time of deep sorrow and betrayal for David, as he had to witness his own son turning against him and leading a rebellion.
