Easy Bible・2 Samuel 17
2 Samuel 17:14
Absalom and all the men of Israel said, "The advice of Hushai the Arkite is better than that of Ahithophel." For the LORD had determined to frustrate the good advice of Ahithophel in order to bring disaster on Absalom.
In this chapter, Absalom, David's son, seeks advice from Ahithophel on how to defeat David and his followers. Ahithophel suggests pursuing David immediately with a well-equipped army, hoping to strike a crippling blow. Absalom also consults Hushai, who cunningly advises him to gather a large army and personally lead the charge. Hushai's plan is to buy time for David to escape and regroup, ensuring his survival. Absalom follows Hushai's advice, gathering a vast army and appointing commanders to lead different divisions. Meanwhile, David and his loyal followers receive a warning from a young woman, enabling them to escape and hide in the wilderness. As Absalom and his army search for David, Hushai sends secret messengers to inform David of Absalom's plans, allowing him to make strategic decisions. This chapter highlights the contrast between Ahithophel's and Hushai's counsel. Ahithophel's plan would have likely resulted in David's immediate defeat, while Hushai's plan buys David time and gives him a chance to regroup. It also shows the loyalty and resourcefulness of David's followers, as well as the cunning of Hushai in outsmarting Ahithophel and protecting David.
