2 Samuel 21:1
During the reign of David, there was a famine for three successive years; so David sought the face of the LORD. The LORD said, "It is on account of Saul and his blood-stained house; it is because he put the Gibeonites to death."
In this chapter, we learn about a famine that occurred during David's reign. David inquired of the Lord and found out that the famine was a result of Saul's massacre of the Gibeonites. The Gibeonites were a group of people who had made a covenant with the Israelites during the time of Joshua. Out of respect for this covenant, David asked the Gibeonites what they wanted in order to make amends for Saul's actions. The Gibeonites requested that seven of Saul's male descendants be handed over to them for execution. David agreed to their request and spared Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan, because of the oath he had made with Jonathan. The seven descendants were handed over to the Gibeonites, and they were put to death during the barley harvest. After the execution, Rizpah, the mother of two of the executed men, protected their bodies from birds and wild animals. David was moved by her devotion and buried the bones of Saul and his son Jonathan in their family tomb. After this, God answered the prayers for the land, and the famine was lifted.
