2 Samuel 24:1
Again the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and he incited David against them, saying, "Go and take a census of Israel and Judah."

About this Chapter

In this chapter, David decided to count the fighting men in Israel and Judah, which was against God's command. Joab, the commander of the army, tried to dissuade David from doing this, but David insisted. After nine months and twenty days, the census was completed and the number of fighting men was recorded. However, David soon realized that he had sinned by putting his trust in the strength of his army rather than in God. God was displeased with David's action and gave him three choices for punishment. David chose to fall into the hands of the Lord rather than into human hands, so God sent a plague on Israel. The plague lasted for three days and seventy thousand people died. When the angel of the Lord was about to destroy Jerusalem, God stopped the plague and told David to build an altar on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite. David bought the threshing floor and offered sacrifices to the Lord. God accepted David's sacrifice and the plague stopped. This chapter teaches us the importance of trusting in God rather than in our own strength. David's sin of relying on his army instead of God brought severe consequences upon the people of Israel. It is a reminder for us to always seek God's guidance and put our trust in Him, knowing that He is the source of our strength and protection.
