1 Kings 1:5
Now Adonijah, whose mother was Haggith, put himself forward and said, "I will be king." So he got chariots and horses ready, with fifty men to run ahead of him.

About this Chapter

In this chapter, Adonijah, son of David, sets himself up as king without his father's knowledge or approval. He gathers support from influential people, including Joab and Abiathar, and throws a great feast to celebrate his self-proclaimed kingship. When David hears about Adonijah's actions, he immediately takes action to ensure that Solomon, his chosen successor, becomes king. David orders Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the commander to anoint Solomon as king and have him ride on David's own mule. Adonijah's attempt to become king without David's approval shows his ambition and disregard for his father's wishes. It also highlights the importance of following God's chosen leader and waiting for His timing.
