Easy Bible・1 Kings 2
1 Kings 2:1
When the time drew near for David to die, he gave a charge to Solomon his son.
In this chapter, King David gives his final instructions to his son Solomon before his death. He advises Solomon to be strong and to keep the law of the Lord, so that he may prosper and have a successful reign. David also tells Solomon to deal wisely with Joab, Shimei, and Barzillai, rewarding the loyal and punishing the guilty. David specifically instructs Solomon to bring Joab, the commander of his army, to justice for shedding innocent blood. He also reminds Solomon of the oath he made to Barzillai, a loyal supporter, and urges him to show kindness to Barzillai's descendants. Lastly, David warns Solomon to deal with Shimei, who cursed him during his time of trouble, and advises him to ensure that Shimei does not go unpunished. David's final instructions to Solomon reveal his desire for justice, loyalty, and wisdom in the kingdom. He wants Solomon to rule with integrity and to follow the ways of the Lord. These instructions set the stage for Solomon's reign as the next king of Israel.
