1 Kings 8:22
Then Solomon stood before the altar of the LORD in front of the whole assembly of Israel, spread out his hands toward heaven

About this Chapter

In this chapter, King Solomon dedicates the temple he had built for the Lord. He gathers all the leaders of Israel, and the ark of the covenant is brought into the Most Holy Place. Solomon then addresses the people, praising God for fulfilling His promise to his father David and for allowing the temple to be built. He acknowledges that no temple can contain God, but prays that God's presence will dwell in the temple and that He will hear the prayers of the people when they come to seek Him. Solomon then leads the people in a prayer of dedication. He asks God to listen to the prayers offered in the temple and to forgive the people when they repent and turn back to Him. Solomon also prays for God's guidance and protection for the people of Israel, especially in times of war, famine, or other disasters. He concludes his prayer by asking God to hear and answer their prayers, so that all the nations of the earth may know that the Lord is God. After Solomon finishes his prayer, fire comes down from heaven and consumes the burnt offerings and sacrifices. The glory of the Lord fills the temple, and the people bow down in worship. Solomon and the Israelites offer sacrifices and celebrate for seven days, dedicating the temple to the Lord. The chapter ends with Solomon sending the people away, and they go back to their homes, joyful and thankful for all that God has done.
