Key Passages

1 Kings 12:16
When all Israel saw that the king refused to listen to them, they answered the king: "What share do we have in David, what part in Jesse's son? To your tents, O Israel! Look after your own house, O David!" So the Israelites went home.

About this Chapter

After the death of King Solomon, his son Rehoboam became the king. The people of Israel came to him and asked for lighter burdens and a more compassionate rule. Rehoboam consulted with the older advisors who advised him to listen to the people and lighten their load. However, he also sought the advice of his friends who advised him to increase the people's burdens. Rehoboam foolishly followed the advice of his friends, which led to the division of Israel into two kingdoms. The northern tribes of Israel rebelled against Rehoboam's harsh rule and made Jeroboam their king. Only the tribe of Judah remained loyal to Rehoboam. This division fulfilled the prophecy that God had given to Solomon, because Solomon had turned away from God and worshiped foreign gods. The kingdom of Israel was now divided into the northern kingdom of Israel, consisting of ten tribes, and the southern kingdom of Judah, consisting of two tribes. This division marked a significant turning point in the history of Israel. From this point on, the two kingdoms would have separate kings and separate destinies. The northern kingdom would eventually be conquered by Assyria, while the southern kingdom would last longer but eventually fall to Babylon. This division serves as a reminder of the consequences of disobedience and the importance of seeking God's wisdom in our decisions.
