1 Kings 18:21
Elijah went before the people and said, "How long will you waver between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him." But the people said nothing.

About this Chapter

In this chapter, Elijah confronts the prophets of Baal and challenges them to a test to determine who is the true God. He gathers all the Israelites and the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel. Elijah asks the people how long they will waver between two opinions, and then he proposes a contest: each side will prepare a bull and place it on an altar, and the God who answers by fire will be acknowledged as the true God. The prophets of Baal go first and they cry out to their god all day, but there is no response. Elijah taunts them and suggests that maybe their god is sleeping or busy. Then it is Elijah's turn. He repairs the altar of the Lord, digs a trench around it, and pours water over the offering three times. He prays to God, and immediately fire falls from heaven, consuming the offering, the wood, the stones, and even the water in the trench. Seeing this, the people fall prostrate and declare that the Lord is God. Elijah seizes the moment and commands them to seize the prophets of Baal. He then kills all the prophets of Baal, putting an end to their false worship. Finally, Elijah prays for rain, and a heavy rainstorm comes, ending the three-year drought.
