About this Chapter

In this chapter, the prophet Elisha sends one of his disciples to anoint Jehu as the king of Israel. The disciple carries out the task by pouring oil on Jehu's head and declaring him as the next ruler. This anointing is a sign of God's chosen leader and a symbol of authority and power. After being anointed, Jehu receives a specific mission from God - to destroy the wicked house of Ahab, the former king of Israel, and avenge the bloodshed of the prophets and servants of God. Jehu is commanded to kill not only Ahab's descendants but also anyone associated with his reign. Jehu wastes no time and immediately sets out to fulfill God's command. He rides to Jezreel in his chariot and encounters Joram, the current king of Israel and Ahaziah, the king of Judah. Jehu kills both of them, thus beginning the downfall of the house of Ahab.
