Key Passages

2 Kings 10:30
The LORD said to Jehu, "Because you have done well in accomplishing what is right in my eyes and have done to the house of Ahab all I had in mind to do, your descendants will sit on the throne of Israel to the fourth generation."

About this Chapter

In this chapter, Jehu carries out God's command to destroy the entire family of Ahab, the wicked king of Israel. Jehu kills not only Ahab's son, Joram, but also Ahaziah, the king of Judah, who was visiting Joram. Jehu then proceeds to kill all the remaining seventy sons of Ahab, as well as his close relatives, friends, and priests. Jehu's actions were a fulfillment of God's prophecy against Ahab's family, as punishment for their idolatry and wickedness. Jehu's zeal in executing God's judgment is seen as a righteous act, and he is commended for his obedience. However, Jehu's zeal also leads him to go beyond what God had commanded, as he kills not only the guilty, but also those who were innocent and had no part in Ahab's sins. This chapter serves as a reminder of God's justice and the consequences of disobedience. It also highlights the importance of following God's commands faithfully, without adding or subtracting from them. While Jehu's actions may seem extreme to us, they were a necessary part of God's plan to bring judgment upon the house of Ahab and to purify the nation of Israel.
