2 Kings 11:1
When Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she proceeded to destroy the whole royal family.

About this Chapter

In this chapter, we learn about Athaliah, the wicked queen who usurped the throne of Judah after her son Ahaziah died. She killed all the royal heirs to secure her position, but Joash, the infant son of Ahaziah, was hidden and protected by his aunt Jehosheba and her husband Jehoiada the priest. When Joash turned seven years old, Jehoiada made a plan to reveal him as the rightful king. He gathered the commanders of the guards, the Levites, and other loyal supporters in the temple and made a covenant with them. Then, Jehoiada brought Joash out, anointed him as king, and presented him to the people. Athaliah was furious when she saw this and tore her clothes, but the people rejoiced and put Athaliah to death. After Athaliah's death, Jehoiada restored the worship of the Lord in Judah and made a covenant between the Lord, the king, and the people. Joash reigned for forty years and did what was right in the eyes of the Lord as long as Jehoiada the priest was alive.
