1 Chronicles 17:1
After David was settled in his palace, he said to Nathan the prophet, "Here I am, living in a palace of cedar, while the ark of the covenant of the LORD is under a tent."

About this Chapter

In this chapter, David expresses his desire to build a house for God, a permanent dwelling place for the Ark of the Covenant. However, God speaks to the prophet Nathan and tells him to relay a message to David. God reminds David of his past, how He had been with him since he was a shepherd and had brought him from being a shepherd to being the king of Israel. God tells David that He has never dwelled in a house made by human hands, but has always moved in a tent as He traveled with the Israelites. God also promises to make a great name for David and to establish a kingdom for his descendants. Instead of David building a house for God, God tells David that He will build a house for him, a dynasty that will last forever. God's response to David's desire to build a house for Him highlights the importance of God's presence and His faithfulness to His chosen people. It also foreshadows the coming of Jesus, who would be a descendant of David and establish an eternal kingdom. This chapter reminds us that our plans and desires may not always align with God's plans, but His plans are always greater and more significant than ours.
