Easy Bible・1 Chronicles 23
1 Chronicles 23:2
He also gathered together all the leaders of Israel, as well as the priests and Levites.
In this chapter, we learn about the organization of the Levites, who were responsible for the service of the tabernacle and later the temple. David, the king, made preparations for the Levites to serve in their various duties. He divided them into three main groups: the Gershonites, the Kohathites, and the Merarites. The Gershonites were responsible for the care of the tabernacle and its coverings, the curtains, and the hangings. The Kohathites were responsible for the care of the holy objects, including the ark, the table, the lampstand, the altars, and the utensils. The Merarites were responsible for the care of the frames, crossbars, posts, and bases of the tabernacle. David also appointed the Levites to assist the priests in their duties, such as offering sacrifices and leading worship. He organized them into divisions according to their ancestral families. Each division had its own responsibilities and duties, and they were to serve in the house of the Lord continually.
