2 Chronicles 10:14
he followed the advice of the young men and said, "My father made your yoke heavy; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions."
After the death of King Solomon, his son Rehoboam became the king. The people of Israel came to him, asking for lighter burdens that were imposed on them during Solomon's reign. Rehoboam sought advice from the elders who had served his father, but he also consulted the young men who grew up with him. The elders advised him to listen to the people and lighten their load, but the young men advised him to be even harsher than his father. Rehoboam rejected the wise counsel of the elders and chose to follow the advice of his peers. When the people heard Rehoboam's response, they rebelled against him and appointed Jeroboam as their king. Only the tribes of Judah and Benjamin remained loyal to the house of David. This division marked the beginning of the split between the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah. The story of Rehoboam's folly serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of seeking wise counsel and making decisions with humility and consideration for the well-being of others. It reminds us that pride and arrogance can lead to division and downfall.
