2 Chronicles 11:5
Rehoboam lived in Jerusalem and built up towns for defense in Judah:
After King Rehoboam succeeded his father Solomon, the kingdom of Israel split into two: the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah. Rehoboam, fearing that his people would turn against him and go to Jerusalem to worship, fortified several cities in Judah to secure his rule. He strengthened the defenses of Bethlehem, Etam, Tekoa, Beth Zur, Soco, Adullam, Gath, Mareshah, Ziph, Adoraim, Lachish, Azekah, Zorah, Aijalon, and Hebron. Rehoboam also gathered an army of 180,000 men from the tribes of Judah and Benjamin to fight against the northern kingdom of Israel, which was under the rule of King Jeroboam. However, God sent a prophet named Shemaiah to deliver a message to Rehoboam, instructing him not to go to war against his brothers. Rehoboam listened to the word of the Lord and did not go to war. Throughout Rehoboam's reign, he and his people remained faithful to the Lord and followed the commandments and laws given by Moses. As a result, they were blessed and prospered under his rule.
