2 Chronicles 27:6
Jotham grew powerful because he walked steadfastly before the LORD his God.

About this Chapter

Jotham became king of Judah at the age of twenty-five and reigned for sixteen years in Jerusalem. He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, just as his father Uzziah had done. However, unlike his father, Jotham did not enter the temple of the Lord. The people continued their corrupt practices, but Jotham built the Upper Gate of the temple and carried out various building projects in the towns of Judah. Jotham's military strength grew as he conquered the Ammonites and forced them to pay him tribute. He became powerful because he was determined to seek the Lord and follow his commands. Jotham's reign is summarized in the following verse: 'Jotham grew powerful because he walked steadfastly before the Lord his God.' Despite his good reign, Jotham's story ends with a note of caution. The Chronicler mentions that Jotham died at the age of forty-one and was buried in the City of David, but his son Ahaz succeeded him as king. Ahaz would go on to have a disastrous reign and lead the people of Judah into idolatry. Jotham's story serves as a reminder that even a good king cannot guarantee the faithfulness of future generations.
