About this Chapter

In this chapter, Ezra discovers that the people of Israel, including the priests and Levites, have intermarried with the surrounding pagan nations. He is deeply troubled by this and falls on his knees, spreading out his hands to God in prayer. Ezra acknowledges the sins of the people and the guilt they bear for disobeying God's commands. He recognizes that they have not separated themselves from the neighboring nations and have even adopted their detestable practices. Ezra pleads with God for mercy, confessing the people's unworthiness and the righteousness of God's punishment. He acknowledges that they are experiencing the consequences of their disobedience and that God's judgment is just. However, he also appeals to God's grace and asks for a remnant to be spared and for a fresh start for the people.
