Easy Bible・Nehemiah 5
Nehemiah 5:10
I and my brothers and my men are also lending the people money and grain. But let the exacting of usury stop!
In Nehemiah 5, the people of Israel were facing economic hardships and were burdened with heavy taxes and debt. The wealthy among them were taking advantage of the situation by charging high interest rates and even enslaving their fellow Israelites. Nehemiah, upon hearing about this injustice, was greatly displeased. Nehemiah called a meeting with the nobles and officials and confronted them about their actions. He rebuked them for charging interest on loans and for enslaving their own people. Nehemiah reminded them that they were all part of the same family and that they should be helping one another instead of exploiting each other. Nehemiah set an example by forgiving the debts of those who were burdened with heavy taxes and loans. He also made the nobles and officials promise to stop charging interest and to return any property they had taken from their fellow Israelites. The people agreed to Nehemiah's request and praised God for his justice and mercy.
