In every province and in every city, wherever the edict of the king went, there was joy and gladness among the Jews, with feasting and celebrating. And many people of other nationalities became Jews because fear of the Jews had seized them.

About this Chapter

In Esther 8, after Haman's plot to annihilate the Jews was exposed, Queen Esther pleaded with King Xerxes to revoke the decree. The king granted Esther and Mordecai the authority to write a new decree that allowed the Jews to defend themselves against their enemies. The decree was written, sealed with the king's signet ring, and sent throughout the kingdom. The Jews were filled with joy and relief upon hearing the news. They celebrated and many people in the kingdom became Jews because they feared the power of the Jews. The Jews were finally given the right to defend themselves against those who sought to harm them. This chapter shows God's faithfulness in protecting His people. Despite the initial threat of annihilation, God used Esther's courage and influence to save the Jews. It reminds us that God is always working behind the scenes, even when we can't see it, and He will deliver His people from their enemies.
