Psalms 19:1
The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.

About this Chapter

In this chapter, the psalmist praises the glory of God as revealed in both nature and the law. The psalm begins by declaring that the heavens themselves proclaim the majesty of God's handiwork, and the skies display His craftsmanship. Day after day, they pour forth speech, and night after night they reveal knowledge about God. Even though they have no words or language, their voice is heard throughout the earth. The psalmist emphasizes that the sun, like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, rejoices like a champion running a race. It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other end, and nothing is hidden from its heat. The psalmist then shifts his focus to the law of the Lord, describing it as perfect, trustworthy, right, radiant, and more precious than gold. The law of the Lord gives wisdom to the simple and brings joy to the heart. It is pure and enduring, refreshing the soul. The psalmist acknowledges that by keeping God's commands, there is great reward. He also recognizes the importance of avoiding hidden faults and willful sins, asking for forgiveness and deliverance from them. In the final part of the psalm, the psalmist expresses his desire for his words and thoughts to be pleasing to God, for God to be his Rock and Redeemer. The psalm concludes with a humble prayer, asking for God's favor and protection, and for the psalmist's words to be acceptable in His sight.
