Psalms 44:1
We have heard with our ears, O God; our fathers have told us what you did in their days, in days long ago.
This psalm is a cry for help from the Israelites, expressing their confusion and distress. They remember the stories of God's faithfulness in the past, but they are currently experiencing defeat and humiliation. They acknowledge that their current situation is not due to their own righteousness, but they still cry out to God for help, pleading for His unfailing love and salvation. The psalmist recounts the victories God had given to Israel in the past, how He had driven out the nations and established His people in the promised land. However, now they are being defeated by their enemies, and they feel abandoned by God. They express their faith in God's character, His love, and His power, and they call on Him to rise up and rescue them from their enemies. The psalm concludes with a plea for God to wake up and not hide His face from them. The psalmist expresses their trust in God, even in the midst of their suffering, and they end with a plea for God to redeem them for the sake of His unfailing love.
