Psalms 48:1
Great is the LORD, and most worthy of praise, in the city of our God, his holy mountain.
This psalm celebrates the greatness of Zion, the city of God. It describes how beautiful and secure Zion is, and how it is the joy of the whole earth. The psalmist praises God for establishing Zion and protecting it from its enemies. The people are encouraged to walk around Zion, to observe its walls and citadels, and to tell the next generation about God's faithfulness in preserving the city. The psalmist also highlights how God's name is praised throughout the earth because of what He has done for Zion. The kings of the earth gather together and witness the splendor of God's city. They are in awe and trembling, realizing that God is greater than any earthly ruler or power. The psalm concludes with a reminder that God will be our guide even to the end.
