Psalms 82:1
God presides in the great assembly; he gives judgment among the "gods":

About this Chapter

In this psalm, God stands in the divine council and pronounces judgment on the unjust gods. He rebukes them for showing partiality to the wicked and neglecting the weak and the fatherless. God reminds them that they are gods, but they will die like mere mortals. He calls them to rise up and defend the cause of the weak and the needy. The psalmist acknowledges that the earth belongs to God, and all nations are his inheritance. However, because of the unjust ruling of the gods, the psalmist pleads for God to arise and judge the earth. He prays for God to bring justice to the oppressed and to restore righteousness in the land. This psalm serves as a reminder that God is the ultimate judge who holds all authority. It also emphasizes the importance of justice and caring for the weak and the oppressed. As believers, we are called to follow God's example and defend the cause of those who cannot defend themselves.
