Psalms 83:1
O God, do not keep silent; be not quiet, O God, be not still.
In this psalm, the psalmist cries out to God for help against the enemies of Israel. The psalmist describes how these enemies have plotted and conspired against God's people, seeking to destroy them. The psalmist asks God to deal with these enemies, to silence them and make them ashamed. The psalmist also prays for God to pursue and defeat them, so that they may know that God alone is the Most High over all the earth. The psalmist lists the various nations and peoples who have formed an alliance against Israel, including the Edomites, Ishmaelites, Moabites, and Amalekites, among others. The psalmist describes how these enemies have said, 'Come, let us destroy them as a nation, so that Israel's name is remembered no more.' The psalmist appeals to God's past actions, reminding Him of how He dealt with similar enemies in the past, such as the Midianites and Sisera. The psalmist concludes by expressing the psalmist's desire for God to make the enemies of Israel like tumbleweed, like chaff blown away by the wind. The psalmist prays for God to pursue and terrify them with His storm and make them ashamed. The psalmist ultimately trusts in God's power and justice, believing that He will arise and defend His people, so that all the nations may know Him and worship Him.
