Proverbs 26:4
Do not answer a fool according to his folly, or you will be like him yourself.
This chapter in the book of Proverbs highlights the characteristics and consequences of foolishness. It begins by comparing the undeserved honor given to a fool to the fitting punishment of a lazy person. Just as snow in summer and rain during harvest are out of place, so is honor for a fool. A whip for the horse, a bridle for the donkey, and a rod for the backs of fools are all necessary to discipline and correct their foolishness. The chapter then goes on to describe the behavior of a fool. It warns against engaging in the foolishness of arguing with a fool, as it only leads to more folly. Like a dog returning to its vomit, a fool repeats their folly over and over again. The chapter also highlights the danger of trusting a fool with an important task, as they are unreliable and untrustworthy. Overall, Proverbs 26 emphasizes the importance of recognizing and avoiding foolishness. It reminds us that the consequences of foolish behavior are inevitable and that it is wise to distance ourselves from the company of fools.
