About this Chapter

In the final chapter of Ecclesiastes, the Preacher gives his concluding thoughts on the meaning of life. He begins by urging the young to remember their Creator in the days of their youth, before the days of trouble come. He describes the aging process and the difficulties that come with old age, using poetic imagery to depict the diminishing physical strength and the loss of pleasure in life. The Preacher emphasizes the vanity of earthly pursuits and advises the readers to fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. The Preacher warns that God will bring every deed into judgment, whether good or evil. He cautions against excessive study and warns that too much learning can be wearisome to the soul. He advises the readers to seek wisdom from the words of the wise, which are like goads and nails, guiding and anchoring the soul. The Preacher concludes by stating that the words of the wise are given by one Shepherd, implying that true wisdom comes from God alone. The book of Ecclesiastes serves as a reminder that all earthly pursuits are ultimately meaningless and unsatisfying. It urges us to remember our Creator and find meaning in fearing God and keeping His commandments. True wisdom comes from God, and it is through Him that we can find purpose and fulfillment in life.
