Isaiah 17:1
An oracle concerning Damascus: "See, Damascus will no longer be a city but will become a heap of ruins.
This chapter in the book of Isaiah contains a prophecy about the destruction of Damascus, the capital city of Syria. The prophecy states that Damascus will become a heap of ruins, abandoned and forsaken. The cities of Aroer will be deserted, and only flocks will lie down there. The reason for this destruction is given in the following verses. The people of Damascus have forgotten God, and have turned to idols and false gods. Therefore, God will bring judgment upon them and their city will be destroyed. This prophecy was fulfilled in part when the Assyrians captured Damascus in 732 BC. However, it is believed that the complete fulfillment of this prophecy is yet to come in the future. It serves as a reminder to us to always put our trust in God and not in the things of this world.
