Isaiah 19:1
An oracle concerning Egypt: See, the LORD rides on a swift cloud and is coming to Egypt. The idols of Egypt tremble before him, and the hearts of the Egyptians melt within them.

About this Chapter

In this chapter, Isaiah prophesies about the judgment that will come upon Egypt. He describes how the idols of Egypt will tremble and the hearts of the Egyptians will melt with fear. The Nile River, which was a source of life and fertility for Egypt, will dry up, and the canals will stink. The fishermen and those who work the flax will mourn, and the foundations of Egypt will be shaken. Isaiah also speaks about the confusion and division that will come upon Egypt. The wise counselors of Pharaoh will give foolish advice, and the spirit of Egypt will be filled with confusion. The Egyptians will turn to their idols and their sorcerers, but they will find no help. Instead, God will bring a cruel master to rule over Egypt, and the Egyptians will cry out to the Lord for help. In the end, Isaiah prophesies that the Lord will strike Egypt with a plague, and they will turn back to the Lord. He will send a savior to deliver them from their oppressors, and Egypt will worship the Lord. There will be a highway from Egypt to Assyria, and the two nations will worship together. This chapter ends with the assurance that the Lord will bless Egypt, saying, 'Blessed be Egypt my people, Assyria my handiwork, and Israel my inheritance.'
