About this Chapter

Isaiah 22 describes the prophecy of the fall of Jerusalem. God reveals to Isaiah that the city will be besieged and its people will be taken captive. The chapter begins with a vision of the Valley of Vision, which represents Jerusalem. The people of Jerusalem are filled with joy, but God declares that they will weep and mourn because of the impending destruction. God calls out the leaders of Jerusalem for their lack of repentance and their self-indulgent lifestyle. He says that they did not look to Him, but instead relied on their own strength and resources. God appoints a new leader, Eliakim, to replace Shebna, who was corrupt and unfit for his position. Eliakim will be given the authority to open and shut doors, symbolizing his leadership role. Despite the impending destruction, God promises that He will restore Jerusalem in the future. He says that He will remove the disgrace from His people and give them a place of honor. However, this restoration is conditional upon their repentance and turning back to Him. The chapter ends with a reminder that God holds the key of David, symbolizing His authority and control over the destiny of Jerusalem.
