Easy Bible・Isaiah 37
Isaiah 37:1
When King Hezekiah heard this, he tore his clothes and put on sackcloth and went into the temple of the LORD.
In this chapter, King Hezekiah of Judah faced a great threat from the Assyrian king, Sennacherib. Hezekiah sought the help of the prophet Isaiah and sent his officials to inquire of the Lord. Isaiah reassured them that the Lord would protect Jerusalem and cause Sennacherib to retreat. When Sennacherib sent a threatening letter to Hezekiah, mocking the power of God, Hezekiah took the letter to the temple and spread it out before the Lord. Hezekiah prayed to God, acknowledging His sovereignty and asking for deliverance from the Assyrians. Isaiah then sent a message to Hezekiah, assuring him that God had heard his prayer and seen the insults of the Assyrian king. Isaiah prophesied that Sennacherib would be defeated and would not even enter Jerusalem. That night, the angel of the Lord went out and struck down 185,000 Assyrian soldiers, causing Sennacherib to withdraw and return to his own land.
