Isaiah 49:1
Listen to me, you islands; hear this, you distant nations: Before I was born the LORD called me; from my birth he has made mention of my name.

About this Chapter

In this chapter, Isaiah speaks of a servant of God who will be called from birth to bring Jacob back to Him and gather Israel to Himself. The servant, though despised by the nations, is chosen and honored by God to be a light for the Gentiles and bring salvation to the ends of the earth. The servant wonders if his labor has been in vain, but God reassures him that not only will He restore Israel, but He will also make the servant a covenant for the people and a light for the Gentiles. God's salvation will reach the ends of the earth, and even kings will bow down to the servant. God promises to deliver the captives and provide for those who are in need. He will lead them beside springs of water and make their paths straight. The people will no longer hunger or thirst, for God will provide for all their needs. They will come from afar, including those who were lost and scattered, and they will worship God in joy and thanksgiving.
