Easy Bible・Isaiah 58
Isaiah 58:6
"Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke?
In this chapter, God speaks through the prophet Isaiah to address the Israelites' hypocrisy in their fasting. He points out that their fasting is merely an outward show of piety, while their hearts are far from Him. God reveals that true fasting is not just about abstaining from food, but it is also about seeking justice, showing compassion, and caring for the oppressed. God desires a fasting that leads to genuine repentance and a change of heart. He calls for the Israelites to loosen the chains of injustice, set the oppressed free, share their food with the hungry, provide shelter for the homeless, and clothe the naked. He emphasizes that true fasting brings about a transformation in the lives of the fasting individuals and the society as a whole. Through this chapter, God teaches us that our actions should align with our faith. It is not enough to perform religious rituals outwardly; our hearts must be fully devoted to God. True fasting involves not only self-denial but also acts of love and justice towards others. May we strive to fast in a way that pleases God and brings about positive change in our lives and the world around us.
