Key Passages

Isaiah 63:1
Who is this coming from Edom, from Bozrah, with his garments stained crimson? Who is this, robed in splendor, striding forward in the greatness of his strength? "It is I, speaking in righteousness, mighty to save."

About this Chapter

This chapter begins with a description of God's vengeance against the nations. The speaker, identified as the Messiah, announces that he has trodden the winepress alone and stained his garments with the blood of his enemies. He declares that the day of vengeance is in his heart, and the year of his redemption has come. The Messiah then reflects on God's past acts of salvation and redemption for his people. He remembers how God's love and compassion had led him to redeem them in the past. However, he laments that the people rebelled against God and grieved his Holy Spirit, causing God to turn against them and become their enemy. Despite their rebellion, the Messiah pleads for God's mercy and forgiveness. He acknowledges that they are all God's people, and he asks God to look down from heaven and see their distress. The chapter ends with a plea for God to remember his covenant with his people and to have compassion on them once again.
