About this Chapter

Jeremiah 31 is a chapter in which God promises to make a new covenant with His people. The chapter begins with God speaking to Jeremiah, saying that He will bring His people back from captivity and restore them to their land. God promises to be their God and they will be His people. He assures them that they will find comfort and joy. God also promises to rebuild and restore the cities of Judah. In the middle of the chapter, God declares that He will make a new covenant with His people. This new covenant will be different from the old covenant that was made at Mount Sinai. The old covenant was written on stone tablets, but the new covenant will be written on the hearts of the people. God says that He will forgive their sins and remember them no more. The chapter ends with God reaffirming His love for His people. He promises to bless them with abundance and prosperity. He says that the days are coming when the people will no longer say, 'The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge.' Instead, each person will be accountable for their own sins. God will give them a new heart and put His law in their minds. They will all know Him and have a personal relationship with Him.
