Easy Bible・Jeremiah 35
Jeremiah 35:14
'Jonadab son of Recab ordered his sons not to drink wine and this command has been kept. To this day they do not drink wine, because they obey their forefather's command. But I have spoken to you again and again, yet you have not obeyed me.
In this chapter, God instructs Jeremiah to bring the Rechabites, a group of people known for their obedience to their ancestor's commands, into the temple and offer them wine to drink. However, the Rechabites refuse to drink the wine, explaining that their ancestor, Jonadab, had commanded them not to drink wine or build houses. God then uses the faithfulness of the Rechabites as an example of obedience to contrast with the disobedience of the Israelites. The Rechabites' obedience to their ancestor's commands is seen as a symbol of their faithfulness and loyalty. Despite living in a time of great temptation and pressure to conform to the ways of the world, they remain steadfast in their commitment to follow the instructions passed down to them. Their obedience serves as a rebuke to the Israelites, who have repeatedly disobeyed God's commands and turned to idols. Through the example of the Rechabites, God emphasizes the importance of obedience and faithfulness. He commends the Rechabites for their unwavering commitment to their ancestor's commands and contrasts it with the Israelites' disobedience. This chapter serves as a reminder that God values obedience and loyalty, and that He rewards those who remain faithful to His commands.
