The word came to Jeremiah from the LORD after Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard had released him at Ramah. He had found Jeremiah bound in chains among all the captives from Jerusalem and Judah who were being carried into exile to Babylon.

About this Chapter

Jeremiah is released from prison and given a choice to go anywhere he wants. He chooses to stay in Judah and serve under Gedaliah, who has been appointed as governor by the Babylonians. Gedaliah assures Jeremiah that he will be treated well and protected. Jeremiah decides to stay in Mizpah, a town in Judah, and live among the people who are left in the land. Gedaliah encourages the people who fled to return to Judah and promises that they will be safe under his rule. However, some of the people are afraid of the Babylonians and choose to go to Egypt instead.
