Jeremiah 41:10
Ishmael made captives of all the rest of the people who were in Mizpah-the king's daughters along with all the others who were left there, over whom Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard had appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam. Ishmael son of Nethaniah took them captive and set out to cross over to the Ammonites.

About this Chapter

In this chapter, we learn about the assassination of Gedaliah, who was appointed as governor over the remnant of Judah by the Babylonians after they had conquered Jerusalem. Ishmael, a member of the royal family, plotted with ten other men to kill Gedaliah. They invited Gedaliah and his men to a meal and then attacked and killed them. After the assassination, Ishmael also killed seventy men who had come to offer sacrifices at the temple. He took the rest of the people captive and planned to escape to the Ammonites, but was pursued by Johanan and his men.
