Lamentations 1:1
How deserted lies the city, once so full of people! How like a widow is she, who once was great among the nations! She who was queen among the provinces has now become a slave.

About this Chapter

This chapter describes the desolation and sorrow of Jerusalem after its destruction. The city is personified as a grieving widow, once a queen among the nations but now in mourning. The people are in distress, with no one to comfort them. The enemies have triumphed over Jerusalem, and the city is left in ruins. The people are filled with grief and shame, and they cry out to God for mercy. The chapter begins with the lamentation of Jerusalem, expressing her deep sorrow and anguish. The city is deserted, her streets are empty, and her gates are destroyed. The people are in exile, and there is no one to help them. Jerusalem acknowledges that her suffering is a result of her own sins and rebellion against God. Jerusalem calls out to God, pleading for Him to see her affliction and to bring justice upon her enemies. She confesses her sins and acknowledges that God is righteous in bringing judgment upon her. Despite her despair, Jerusalem still holds onto hope, trusting in the faithfulness and mercy of God.
