Ezekiel 9:4
and said to him, "Go throughout the city of Jerusalem and put a mark on the foreheads of those who grieve and lament over all the detestable things that are done in it."

About this Chapter

In this chapter, God shows Ezekiel a vision of six men coming from the direction of the upper gate, each with a weapon of destruction in his hand. Among them was a man clothed in linen with a writing kit at his side. God commanded the man in linen to go through the city of Jerusalem and put a mark on the foreheads of those who grieve and lament over the detestable things done in the city. Then, God gave orders to the other men, saying, 'Follow him through the city and kill without showing pity or compassion. Slaughter the old men, young men and maidens, women and children, but do not touch anyone who has the mark. Begin at my sanctuary.' So they began with the elders who were in front of the temple. God's judgment on the idolaters in Jerusalem was severe. He was going to punish them for their wickedness and abominations. However, He also showed His mercy by marking those who were faithful and grieved over the sins of the city. This vision serves as a reminder that God sees and knows the hearts of His people, and He will judge each person accordingly.
