Easy Bible・Ezekiel 17
Ezekiel 17:22
"'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: I myself will take a shoot from the very top of a cedar and plant it; I will break off a tender sprig from its topmost shoots and plant it on a high and lofty mountain.
In this chapter, God speaks to Ezekiel and gives him a parable about two eagles and a vine. The first eagle represents Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, who takes a seed from the top of a cedar tree and plants it in a fertile field. This seed grows into a vine, which spreads its branches and produces fruit. However, the vine looks to the second eagle, representing Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, for help and protection. The vine breaks its covenant with the first eagle and turns to the second eagle for support. God then explains the meaning of the parable to Ezekiel. The first eagle represents Nebuchadnezzar, who will come and take Zedekiah, the king of Judah, captive and bring him to Babylon. Zedekiah had made a covenant with Nebuchadnezzar, but he broke it by seeking help from Egypt. God declares that Zedekiah will die in Babylon, and the kingdom of Judah will be uprooted and destroyed. However, God also promises restoration. He says that He will take a tender sprig from the top of the cedar tree and plant it on a high mountain in Israel. This sprig will grow into a majestic cedar tree, and all the birds will dwell in its shade. This represents the restoration of Israel and the establishment of a righteous and prosperous kingdom under God's rule.
