Easy Bible・Ezekiel 18
Ezekiel 18:20
The soul who sins is the one who will die. The son will not share the guilt of the father, nor will the father share the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous man will be credited to him, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against him.
In this chapter, God speaks through the prophet Ezekiel to address the Israelites' belief in generational curses. He emphasizes that each individual is responsible for their own actions and will be judged accordingly. The chapter begins with a proverb that the Israelites were using to complain about God's justice, saying that the fathers have eaten sour grapes and the children's teeth are set on edge. God refutes this proverb and declares that everyone will be judged based on their own righteousness or wickedness. God explains that if a righteous person turns to sin, they will be held accountable for their actions and will face punishment. Likewise, if a wicked person turns from their wickedness and does what is just and right, they will be forgiven and live. God desires that people repent and turn from their evil ways so that they may live. He does not take pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather desires their repentance and salvation. Furthermore, God addresses the Israelites' complaint that his ways are unjust. He declares that his ways are fair and just, and it is the Israelites who have turned away from him. He urges them to repent and turn back to him, for he takes no pleasure in the death of anyone. God emphasizes that each individual will be judged based on their own actions, and he offers the opportunity for repentance and forgiveness to all who turn to him.
