Ezekiel 20:12
Also I gave them my Sabbaths as a sign between us, so they would know that I the LORD made them holy.

About this Chapter

In Ezekiel 20, God speaks to the elders of Israel and recounts their history of rebellion against Him. He reminds them of His deliverance from Egypt and their continued disobedience in the wilderness. Despite their persistent rebellion, God shows His mercy by not completely destroying them for the sake of His name. God then explains that He gave them His laws and statutes as a way to bring them back to Him, but they still refused to obey. Instead, they followed the idolatrous practices of the nations around them. God's anger was kindled, and He purposed to scatter them among the nations as a punishment for their unfaithfulness. However, even in their exile, God's mercy is evident. He promises to bring them back to the land of Israel and cleanse them from their impurities. He will give them a new heart and a new spirit, enabling them to walk in His ways. This restoration is not for their sake, but for the sake of His holy name.
