Easy Bible・Ezekiel 23
Ezekiel 23:49
You will suffer the penalty for your lewdness and bear the consequences of your sins of idolatry. Then you will know that I am the Sovereign LORD."
Ezekiel 23 tells the story of two sisters, Oholah and Oholibah, who represent the kingdoms of Israel and Judah. The chapter begins with a graphic portrayal of their unfaithfulness to God, as they engage in idolatry and sexual immorality. This leads to God's judgment upon them, as He allows their enemies to conquer and humiliate them. Despite their sins, God still longs for their repentance and restoration. The chapter also highlights the consequences of their actions, as the Assyrians and Babylonians are used by God to punish the sisters. Oholah, representing Israel, is punished first by the Assyrians, who invade and destroy the northern kingdom. Oholibah, representing Judah, witnesses the downfall of her sister but fails to learn from it. She continues in her sinful ways, leading to the Babylonian invasion and the destruction of Jerusalem. Through this story, Ezekiel emphasizes the seriousness of idolatry and sexual immorality, and the need for repentance and turning back to God. It serves as a warning to the people of Israel and Judah, reminding them of the consequences of their unfaithfulness. It also reveals God's desire for His people to return to Him, even in the midst of judgment and destruction.
