Ezekiel 40:2
In visions of God he took me to the land of Israel and set me on a very high mountain, on whose south side were some buildings that looked like a city.

About this Chapter

In this chapter, Ezekiel receives a vision from God of a new temple. The vision occurs in the twenty-fifth year of the exile, and Ezekiel is brought to a very high mountain where he sees a man with the appearance of bronze. The man takes Ezekiel to the entrance of the temple and gives him a detailed tour of its measurements and layout. The vision begins with the outer gate of the temple and Ezekiel is shown the measurements of the gate, the guardrooms, and the outer court. Then, Ezekiel is brought to the inner court where he sees the temple itself, including the vestibule, the sanctuary, and the Most Holy Place. The man also measures the walls, the side rooms, and the thresholds of the temple. Through this vision, God reveals to Ezekiel the plans for a future temple, which will be a place of worship and sacrifice. The detailed measurements emphasize the importance of order and reverence in approaching God. This vision also serves as a reminder to the exiled Israelites that God has not forgotten them and that He has plans for their future restoration.
