Amos 1:1
The words of Amos, one of the shepherds of Tekoa-what he saw concerning Israel two years before the earthquake, when Uzziah was king of Judah and Jeroboam son of Jehoash was king of Israel.
In Amos 1, God pronounces judgment on Israel's neighboring nations. He starts with Damascus, the capital of Aram, for their cruelty and violence. Then, He turns to Gaza, the Philistine city, for their ruthless treatment of people. Next, God condemns Tyre, a wealthy trading city, for their betrayal of Israel. He also judges Edom, Ammon, and Moab, for their brutal acts against Israel. Finally, God declares judgment on Judah and Israel, His own people, for their disobedience and rejection of Him. This chapter shows that God's justice extends beyond Israel to the surrounding nations. It reveals His concern for justice and righteousness in the world. The sins of these nations are not overlooked, and they will face the consequences of their actions. It also serves as a warning to Israel, reminding them of the importance of obedience and faithfulness to God. As we read Amos 1, we are reminded that God is just and righteous. He cares about how people treat one another, and He holds all nations accountable for their actions. It is a call for us to examine our own lives and ensure that we are living in accordance with God's standards of justice and righteousness.
