Amos 6:1
Woe to you who are complacent in Zion, and to you who feel secure on Mount Samaria, you notable men of the foremost nation, to whom the people of Israel come!

About this Chapter

In this chapter, the prophet Amos delivers a series of woes against the complacent and self-indulgent people of Israel. He starts by denouncing those who are at ease in Zion and feel secure on the mountain of Samaria. He warns them of the impending destruction that will come upon them. Amos condemns those who lie on beds adorned with ivory, lounge on their couches, and eat the finest foods and drink wine in bowls. He rebukes those who are not grieved over the ruin of Joseph and are unconcerned about the suffering of their fellow Israelites. The prophet warns that because of their pride and arrogance, the people will be the first to go into exile. He foretells the destruction of their luxurious houses and the loss of their wealth. Amos concludes by emphasizing that God detests the pride of Jacob and will bring down the fortified cities and the people who trust in them.
