The word of the LORD came to Jonah son of Amittai:

About this Chapter

In Jonah chapter 1, God commands Jonah to go to the city of Nineveh and preach against its wickedness. However, Jonah disobeys God and tries to escape by boarding a ship going in the opposite direction. But God sends a great storm that threatens to break the ship apart. The sailors on the ship cry out to their gods for help, but Jonah sleeps through the storm. They wake him up and Jonah admits that he is the reason for the storm because he is running away from God's command. The sailors are afraid and ask Jonah what they should do to stop the storm. Jonah tells the sailors to throw him into the sea, believing that the storm will stop once he is thrown overboard. Reluctantly, the sailors throw Jonah into the sea and immediately the storm calms down. Seeing this, the sailors fear the Lord and offer sacrifices to Him.
